Are you looking to detoxify the air in your bedroom? From chemicals in candles to harsh cleaning products, there are many simple swaps that will ultimately help to get rid of toxins – and make your room a more calming space.

According to previous research conducted by the Better Sleep Council, removing toxins from the air in our bedrooms can help to create a healthier sleep environment.

To help you make a start, the team at Mattress Online have rounded up affordable ways to create a sustainable space by comparing 60 products from a range of retailers. Take a look at the simple things you can do below and turn your bedroom into a planet-friendly sleep sanctuary...

1. Lemon juice (cost: 76p)

Instead of using harsh chemicals to clean your bedroom, opt for all-natural lemon juice instead. As well as being naturally antibacterial and antiseptic, it will also leave your room smelling wonderfully fresh.

Cut lemons to remove stains and smells, or, alternatively, squeeze some fresh lemon juice into a spray bottle and dilute with water.

      2. Red LED Lighting (cost: £4)

Whether you're checking messages on your phone or catching up on a Netflix series, bright light can interfere with your body clock and stop you from dropping off. If you're able to, opt for a red light bulb in your bedroom (these cost around £4). According to the experts at Sleep, red wavelengths of light are best for encouraging sleep.

The team add: 'To save energy, make sure you stick with an LED bulb – they're up to 80 per cent more efficient than other lighting and have a long lifespan of around nine years. A red LED bulb is a quick and affordable change for an eco-friendly bedroom.'

      3. Buy a spider plant (cost: from £7)

Plants not only brighten up our living spaces but they purifying the air and reduce levels of anxiety too. A previous NASA study found that certain plants that survive in low lighting can remove indoor toxins, such as the popular spider plant. It will improve the overall aesthetic of your home, while also bringing some greenery to your space.

      4. Grow your own bamboo palm (cost: around £12)

Another natural air purifier from NASA's research, the bamboo palm, lasts for around 10 years when looked after properly. Get your hands on a small, potted palm and let it grow in your bedroom.

      5. Get a solar alarm clock (cost: from £15)

Do you use your phone as an alarm clock? As easy as it might be, try switching to a manual solar alarm clock instead. The National Sleep Foundation found that the artificial blue light emitted by screens makes it harder for us to fall asleep.

In order to make your bedroom a complete sanctuary — and to sleep well — try to leave technology out of your room. Why not read a book before bed instead of scrolling?

      6. Turn to lavender

Struggling to sleep soundly? Well certain natural fragrances can help us to relax before bed. Lavender, for example, has been proven to evoke feelings of calmness as well as improve sustained sleep quality.

There are plenty of options when it comes to lavender: from pillow sprays to soy candles and lavender-infused eye masks. If your preferred choice is candles, however, it's important to opt for natural ones.

'Some candles do release chemical fragrances, so make an eco-conscious choice with a soy candle. These are made with natural ingredients and infused with essential oils, so they're better for the environment,' Mattress Online explains.

      Holland and Barrett

      7. VOC-free paint (around £62)

Looking to redecorate your bedroom? Ensure you opt for VOC-free paint instead of regular paint. While these can be a little more expensive than other options, it doesn't release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air.

      8. Get your hands on a jute rug (around £62)

Spruce up your bedroom space with a natural jute rug. Hand-crafted from the bark of the plant with the same name, it's the most biodegradable material on the planet and one of the easiest to recycle.

      9. Opt for organic bedding (around £65)

It's also easy to recycle, is naturally breathable (thanks to the lack of chemicals in the manufacturing process), and will help to keep you cool at night.
